This was posted on some Trek newsgroups. It was confirmed today as not
being a hoax by a DS9 fan club president. Ms. Adams is Don Adams' ("Get
Smart") daughter.

Here is the text of the message from Ms. Adams husband:

Subject: Moogie is ill
Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2003 06:36:32 GMT

My wife is Cecily Adams, who played Moogie several times on
DS9. I'm sorry to announce that she is suffering from Stage IV
lung cancer.
She is still a young woman and we have a two-year-old daughter.
Cecily is a non-smoker and organic food proponent, and this is
an unexpected and devastating blow. It occurs to me that
throwing the prayers of a million Star Trek fans into the mix
wouldn't hurt one little bit.

Thanks.
Jim Beaver

In my line of work I've cared for a number of lung cancer patients.
My thoughts & prayers are with Ms Smart & her family. How sad.

Gisele, I've taken the liberty of changing your subject line. The last
thing Cecily needs right now is reading that people think she is dying.
This thing kills a lot of people, but she is fighting with all her strength.
If it can be beaten, she's the girl to do it. So I'd prefer people not
presume she's going to lose this fight.

Thanks.

Sorry Jim. It's just that you called it stage 4 lung cancer which sounded
kind of final. Anyhow, sorry about that and I hope she pulls through.
She played one of my favorite characters on DS9 and I can tell you she is
a DS9 fan favorite. Again, sorry!!!!!

Okay, please don't feel bad. Stage IV means, among other things, that the
cancer has spread. Any cancer that has spread beyond its immediate area is
Stage IV. It's bad, but people have beaten Stage IV.

Ok, that's good to know. I hope she makes it and I hope you and your
family have a good holiday and a better New Year!

Take care,

Sadly, it is rather final. While I hope she survives, realistically stage
iv lung cancer can be fought to survive a year or two and hopefully improve
the quality of life during that period.

http://www.lungcancer.org/health_care/focus_on_lc/treatment/stage_IV.htm

"Overall survival rates for Stage IV NSCLC is one to two years depending on
response to treatment. Five year survival is rare."

Let's hope she's one of the rare ones. And let's hope more effective
treatments are found, this woman is tragically young to be struck down like
this.

True.
When I was diagnosed with cancer, the medics told me that they don't even
consider that it might be terminal before stage V. It's amazing what they
can do these days.
There's a good note on one of the UK Cancer sites - it says "Cancer is just
a word, it's not a sentence".
My thoughts are with her.

I hardly ever read this group, but today I did. My prayers are with her and
you. I will add her to our childrens prayer list, so far we are batting
1000, every person we have prayed for some with cancer some with other
health concerns, all have gotten better and recovered. Our Lord is
miraculous. He gives strength to her, and he can give strength to you. He
is there for your whole family. God bless and keep all of you this holiday!
