Is Stargate SG-1’s Colonel Jack O’Neill himself a Star Trek fan?

I am not talking about the actor, Richard Dean Anderson, who plays O’Neill,
I am talking about the character, Jack O’Neill. The reason I ask is because
I’ve noticed in few episodes that he seem to often have something to do with
Star Trek.

For example, he had asked that if the first prototype starship, the X-303 or
something, could be named ‘Enterprise’! When told (in scientific language)
about a new form of laser weapon, he asked (to ensure he can understand the
weapon by thinking of it in simpler items) if it was like ‘phaser’ where a
female scientist replies that it’s more like photon torpedo. Also, when he
was captured along with his group, and when the bad guys turns up, he tried
to show a Vulcan greeting hand sign, the one Spock always do.

So, I just wonder if O’Neill, supposedly while off -duty, do watch Star Trek
in his spare time or not?

Umm, the character is _fictional_. Its the _writers_ who are fans.

Yes. Colonel O’Neill is fictional and some of the writers may happens to be
Star Trek fans so they though of writing a part where O’Neill say or do
something Star Trek related as homage to Star Trek.

But for the sake of the series, is O’Neill a Star Trek fan? I do recall that
a New Zealand soap, called ‘Shortland Street’ had one of the fictional
characters (a female doctor I believe) happened to be a fan of Star Trek.

I mean, if the writer wanted to pay homage to Star Trek by having a
character do something that is Star Trek related, then that’s fine but since
anything the character do or say on screen becomes official, (isn’t that
what canon all about?) it would then becomes part of that character’s
profile?

If it makes you better able to deal with the world, I guess he can be.

Actually i dont think so because.....
if you go way back there was an episode on a planet where Daniel and this
other "geek" kept quoting Star Trek.. so unless Daniel converted Jack he
isnt a fan because all he did the whole time was roll his eyes at him.

I'm not sure if Jack O'Neill is a Star Trek fan. It is documented,
however, that he is a fan of The Simpsons, which was probably introduced
by Richard Dean Anderson.

It appears that Brigadier General O' Neilll (he had recently been
promoted) is familiar with Star Trek, so he probably watches it often.

OTOH, he had never heard about Star Wars until that time Teal'c talked him into
going to Carter's to watch it (again). So, he must be a hard-core Trek fan. ;-)

No, probably not. He says several times during the series that he
hates sci-fi.
In fact, as an aside, in "Ascension" (Season 5, Episode 3) we find out
that he hasn't seen Star Wars.

No, I don't have a social life. How did you know?
